ARIZONA – Dec. 8, 2022 – The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement is awarding more than $600,000 to 26 organizations across Arizona through its third discretionary grant cycle of the year to address the Foundation’s key focus areas – mental health, substance use disorder, chronic health conditions, and health equity. The funding will support these organizations in their work to improve individual and community health across the state.

In its inaugural year, the Foundation has funded 88 grants totaling approximately $3 million to impact mental health, substance use disorders, chronic health conditions, and health equity in communities across Arizona.

ARIZONA – Feb. 6, 2023 – The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement today announced its second competitive grant opportunity, awarding up to a total of $1 million to organizations making strides to address mental health in Arizona. Nonprofits, educational institutions, and community organizations are encouraged to apply between Feb. 6 and March 6, 2023.
“Being healthy is not just about having good physical health; mental health is just as important,” said Dr. Christine Wiggs, President and Board Chair for the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement. “That is why we are committed to raising awareness, removing stigma, and eliminating barriers to receiving mental healthcare.”
With mental health as its flagship focus, the Foundation is investing in and collaborating with community partners to expand resources and access, reduce stigma, and connect people to care. Areas of focus include but are not limited to: suicide prevention, youth mental health, the intersection of mental health and substance use disorder or health equity, and the COVID-19 effect. The maximum funding per grant award is $125,000.
The Foundation will host a Bidders Conference on Feb. 13, 2023, to share information about the application process, provide tips on standing out in a competitive field, and answer questions. Visit the registration page to sign up.

PHOENIX - Aug. 1, 2022 – The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement announced today that it has opened its discretionary grant application window for organizations addressing Arizona’s most critical health challenges: mental health, substance use disorders, chronic health conditions, and/or health equity.
“As a Foundation, our role is to be a connector — to identify where there is a need and where we can work alongside organizations that are making an impact for Arizonans,” said Dr. Christine Wiggs, President and Board Chair for the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement.
By focusing on Arizona’s key health challenges, the Foundation aims to mobilize, uplift, and advance the health of communities statewide. It will amplify its impact through cross-sector partnerships with trusted local organizations. Through its funding opportunities, the Foundation can expand boots-on-the-ground efforts and invest in programs and applied research that improves well-being and addresses health disparities.
The Foundation is accepting letters of interest now through Friday, Aug. 19, 2022. Organizations that are invited to submit a full application must do so by Sept. 16, 2022. Funding priority is given to proposals that request up to $25,000 in funding, expand publicly available resources, are scalable (or have the potential to increase systems-level capacity), and have a measurable impact. The grant term is one year, with a funding date of Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022.

PHOENIX, Ariz – March 1, 2022 – Blue Cross® Blue Shield® of Arizona (BCBSAZ) announces the launch of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement, building upon the work of BCBSAZ’s public health initiative and expanding efforts to tackle the state’s toughest health challenges.
Focusing on mental health, health equity, chronic health conditions, and substance use disorder, the Foundation will work to mobilize, uplift, and advance Arizona’s communities. It will amplify impact through cross-sector partnerships, and by providing grants that support programs and applied research.
The Foundation’s flagship focus is mental health and will commit $5 million over three years to address a wide range of mental health issues. Applications for its first competitive grant will open on March 1, 2022 for programs and/or applied research that target issues such as access – provider shortage, telehealth, suicide prevention, youth mental health, intersection of mental health and substance use disorder, and the COVID-19 effect.
“We’ve always had a strong commitment to improving the health of Arizonans, and the Foundation is the framework that will allow us to take that commitment one step further,” said Dr. Christine Wiggs, President and Board Chair for the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Foundation for Community & Health Advancement.
