Health equity is possible when people have equitable access to the resources they need to thrive. Low income, unstable housing, lack of transportation, or lack of access to healthy foods can create a constant source of stress, requiring people to sacrifice other areas of life and health as they attempt to meet their basic needs.
The places people are born, live, learn, and work influence their opportunity to live a long and healthy life. Arizonans living in Scottsdale ZIP code 85258, for example, have a life expectancy at birth of 85 years. Whereas, the life expectancy for those living 13 miles away in ZIP code 85004 is 71 years.
